Nature as the scripture
Contemplations adapted from Still Point Zen 禪路—where lakes,
mountains, waterfalls, and roads teach the Dharma without a single
forced word.

The still lake is the perfect teacher
In Zen, the still lake is the perfect teacher of mind. When
undisturbed, its surface becomes a flawless mirror—reflecting
snow-capped mountains, glowing clouds, and vast sky with absolute
fidelity, yet holding nothing. The moment a breeze or thought
arises, the image shatters into ripples; when it settles, clarity
returns instantly.
This serene scene, where heaven and earth merge in perfect
symmetry, reminds us that our true nature is this mirror-like
awareness: luminous, empty, and undisturbed at its depth. Do not
chase the reflections of success, failure, joy, or sorrow—simply
let them appear and dissolve.
Sit quietly like this lake, and the whole universe will reveal
itself within you, exactly as it is.

Refuge
The Temple Hidden in the Heart of the Mountain ·
Stillness within the world’s embrace
In Zen, the deepest practice is not to escape the world, but to
find stillness within its very embrace. Nestled between towering
cliffs that have stood for millennia, an ancient temple rests in
quiet humility—neither conquering the mountain nor crushed by it.
Here the immense and the intimate meet: vast emptiness above, warm
lantern light below. Awakening does not require grand isolation or
heroic effort. True refuge is discovered when we allow ourselves
to be held exactly where we are—small yet complete, surrounded by
the immense, yet utterly at peace.
The mountain does not move, and the temple does not strive. In
this wordless dialogue, the Dharma reveals itself: you are already
home.

Journey
The Endless Path of Return ·
The winding road is the way itself
In Zen, the winding road is not a detour but the very way itself.
An ancient path curves through vibrant hills and distant peaks,
bathed in gold of dawn or dusk, inviting us to walk without hurry
or destination. Each bend reveals new layers; the road remains
one—unchanging in essence, ever-changing in appearance.
Life unfolds not in straight lines of conquest, but in patient
meandering that returns us again and again to the present. Walk
mindfully, without clinging to the horizon or regretting the turns
behind. In every step, mountain, valley, sky, and walker are
already complete.
True arrival is not at the end of the path, but in the awareness
that you have never truly left home.

The Silent Carving of Stillness ·
Water does not force
In Zen, water teaches the deepest lesson: it does not force, yet
nothing can withstand its patient flow. A waterfall pouring from
mountain heights through ancient rock into serene meadows embodies
wu wei—the art of non-action. Amid rugged cliffs, it carves canyons
not through struggle, but through persistent, gentle surrender to
gravity and nature’s rhythm.
True transformation arises not from resistance, but from aligning
with the present moment’s natural descent. In stillness and flow,
even the hardest obstacles yield to grace—revealing clarity,
peace, and the boundless path ahead.

The Sunset That Returns Home ·
Shine fully, then let go
As the sun dips behind snow-capped peaks, the mountain does not
cling to the light. It lets the fiery glow wash over its face one
last time before releasing it into night. The still lake mirrors
this quiet surrender—reflecting the burning sky without trying to
hold the warmth.
In Zen, this is the heart of practice: to shine fully in each
moment, then let go without regret. The day ends not in defeat,
but in graceful return. Mountain remains, lake remains, light
moves on—yet nothing is lost.
True peace is not in grasping the sunset, but in becoming the
stillness that can beautifully receive it and let it go.
